What Is the Human Aura?
If you have ever wondered about the aura meaning, or questioned why you instantly feel comfortable around some people and completely drained around others, you are not alone. Across many ancient healing traditions, the human energy field, also known as the aura, is believed to surround every living being. It reflects our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.
Many people cannot physically see an aura, but they naturally experience it every day. You may have sensed the peaceful presence of someone without them saying a word, or felt uneasy the moment you entered a particular room. These subtle experiences are often described as our awareness of the human energy field.
Just as we care for our physical body every day, our energetic body also deserves care. Practices such as aura cleansing, energy healing, emotional awareness, meditation, and Reiki healing can help strengthen your aura, improve emotional wellbeing, and help you feel calmer, lighter, and more balanced.
In this blog, I want to share what an aura is, why it matters, what weakens it, how trauma can affect it, and simple ways to care for your energy naturally.

Humans, animals, plants and even non-living objects have an aura. Even the mobile or laptop you are holding has an aura.
All things have aura because at the most basic level, everything is energy.
The aura of a human is more complex than the aura of a book or mobile that you are holding.
In this blog, I will focus more about human aura.
Before I talk any further about aura meaning, I want you to examine if any of these statements feel right to you.
- I have felt physically and emotionally energized in the company of some people.
- I have felt physically and emotionally drained by certain people.
- I have felt immediately comfortable or uncomfortable around someone I just met.
- I have felt immediately scared or worried around someone I just met.
- I have had intuitive messages, thoughts and sensations about a place, person or situation.
- I have had intuitive thoughts about the wellbeing of someone.
- I have been able to sense that someone is dishonest with me.
If you have nodded to any of these statements, then you are someone who is already aware of other people’s energetic aura and can naturally feel it. If these experiences describe you, you may also be an empath or a highly sensitive person.
Aura is not only the first part of you that feels the energy of things around you, but it is also your first line of energetic protection.
Some of us are born with the ability to see auras. Young children are usually more aware of the energy of auras as well. Anyone can learn how to experience auras and most people can learn how to see auras. It does take practice, awareness and patience.
Just because you cannot see auras does not mean you have not been experiencing their energy your entire life. Many people have the ability to feel energy rather than see it. This naturally explains why they may feel emotionally uplifted around certain people and completely exhausted around others.
Aura Meaning
WE ALL ARE ENERGY
Before our physical body, we are beings of light, surrounded by multiple layers of energy that form our energy body, commonly known as the human energy field or aura.
Auras are an energetic, electromagnetic field or atmosphere that surrounds both living and non-living things.
The human aura is an egg-shaped energy field that surrounds our physical body. It is more like a three-dimensional atmosphere surrounding your entire body. Aura is a protective shell and acts like an energetic shield, a communicator and a mirror of our inner world.
The human aura is made up of seven layers, each with a distinct purpose and meaning.
Your aura is one part of the more extensive subtle energy body. The aura is given life through the chakras, which are the energy centres within our body. Together they work continuously to maintain balance, vitality and wellbeing.
Scientific research continues to show us that everything in existence is made from the same fundamental building blocks. At the smallest level, all matter is energy.
Some forms of energy cannot be seen by the naked eye. Yet every one of us is made of the same building block called the atom.
Your aura or human energy field is your first introduction to someone. Before you shake hands, hug or greet someone, the energy of your aura has already met the energy of theirs. This silent exchange explains why you sometimes feel something about a person or place before any conversation begins.

How does Aura look like?
Every Human Aura in this universe is unique. Therefore every aura also appears differently.
According to each person’s individual energy, the aura will naturally vary.
When you stand close to a fire, you cannot see the warmth directly, but you can certainly feel it. In the same way, the aura is a subtle energy that can be felt, sensed and, by some people, even seen.
Some people are able to see aura by softening their gaze or gently relaxing their eyes. The aura is usually made up of different colours, and each colour may reflect your emotions, thoughts and current state of mind.
For instance:
- Bright yellow may represent happiness, creativity and enthusiasm.
- Dark grey may reflect grief, sadness or emotional stress.
- Pink often represents empathy, kindness and unconditional love.
An aura often appears like a soft glowing light or a coloured mist surrounding the body. Some describe it as gentle layers of light radiating outwards, similar to sunlight passing through clouds. Others compare it to the shimmering heat waves rising from a warm road.
Aura has a gentle shine. This is perhaps why many paintings of saints and spiritual masters throughout history also depict a glowing halo around them.

Can People Really Feel Your Energy?
Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt uncomfortable without anyone saying a word? Or met someone for the very first time and immediately felt calm, safe, or drawn towards them?
Most of us have had experiences like these. Whether we call it intuition, body language, emotional awareness, or energy, we are constantly picking up subtle signals from the people around us. Many of these experiences are connected to the human energy field, even if we have never consciously thought about it before.
EVERY HUMAN COMES INTO THIS WORLD WITH NATURAL INTUITIVE AND PSYCHIC ABILITIES.
For most of us, our extrasensory abilities were never honoured or spoken about while growing up. They may even have been dismissed when we were young. Unless you had parents or caregivers who trusted and encouraged their own intuition, you probably never received appreciation for these natural gifts.
The truth is that everyone has the potential to become more intuitive. Just as we learn any other skill in life, we can also learn to become more aware of our own energy and the energy around us.
You simply need to understand how you naturally receive intuitive information and then practice becoming aware of it with curiosity instead of judgement.
When we begin paying attention, we slowly realise that our body has always been communicating with us. Sometimes it speaks through a feeling of peace. Sometimes through discomfort. Sometimes through excitement. And sometimes through an unexplainable knowing.
Learning to trust these experiences is often one of the first steps in understanding your own aura and strengthening your connection with your inner wisdom.

What Weakens Your Aura?
Your aura is the direct reflection of your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Nothing remains hidden. Everything you experience is gradually reflected within your aura because your physical body, chakras, nervous system, emotions, and energy remain deeply connected.
If you have a vital, strong, and radiant aura, it becomes even more important to protect your energy. There will always be environments, situations, and people who unconsciously draw from your energy. Many people describe these individuals as “energy vampires,” not because they intentionally wish to harm you, but because they are themselves depleted and naturally seek energy wherever they find it.
People instinctively notice someone whose energy feels calm, grounded, and joyful. A healthy aura has a magnetic quality. It quietly influences the people around it without saying a single word.
Our aura is the mirror of the life we live.
A person’s aura reflects the quality of their thoughts, emotions, relationships, lifestyle, and experiences. It gently carries both the joyful memories and the painful experiences we have lived through. Every act of love, every fear, every loss, every victory, and every lesson leaves an energetic imprint within us.
I often compare our being to a radio.
A radio receives different stations depending upon the frequency it is tuned into. In a similar way, our emotional state influences the energetic frequency we radiate.
When we experience emotions such as love, gratitude, peace, compassion, forgiveness, and joy, our energy naturally becomes lighter and more expansive.
When we remain in prolonged fear, anger, guilt, resentment, shame, or sadness, our energetic vibration becomes denser. This does not make us bad people. It simply means our body and mind are carrying experiences that need compassion and healing.
This is why energy healing, emotional healing, and self awareness become so important. The invisible energy you emit is your aura, and your aura often becomes a mirror of your emotional and mental state.
Here are some common signs that your aura may need healing and strengthening:
- Fatigue
- Feeling emotionally drained
- Unexplained health issues
- Constant stress
- Difficulty making decisions
- Poor concentration
- Brain fog
- Mood swings
- Negative thinking
- Insomnia
- Unexplained body pain
- Frequent headaches
- Low confidence
- Lack of enthusiasm for life
- Anxiety and phobias
- Weak personal boundaries
- Neglecting self care
- Financial struggles
- Feeling stuck in life
- Insecurity
These signs do not always mean that something is “wrong” with you. Sometimes they simply indicate that your body, mind, and human energy field are asking for rest, healing, and greater awareness.

Reasons your aura may become weak
Our aura is constantly interacting with the world around us. Just as our physical body responds to food, movement, and sleep, our energetic body also responds to everything we experience each day.
Some of the common reasons that weaken the aura include:
- Negative thinking
- Chronic stress
- Grief and emotional pain
- Fear and insecurity
- Anger and resentment
- Unprocessed emotions
- Difficult relationships
- Lifestyle habits
- Lack of sleep
- Poor nutrition
- Environmental pollution
- Geopathic stress
- Illness
- Bacteria and viruses
If your diet consists mainly of highly processed foods, this too can influence your energy. Your aura naturally shines brighter when your physical body feels nourished and supported. Choosing fresh, minimally processed foods that are closer to their natural state benefits not only your physical health but also supports aura healing and overall vitality.
Water also plays a significant role in maintaining both physical and energetic wellbeing. Many of us become dehydrated without realising it. Drinking sufficient water throughout the day helps your body function optimally while also supporting a refreshed and balanced human energy field.
Can Trauma Affect Your Aura?
One of the questions I am asked most often is whether trauma can affect our aura.
My answer is yes.
Intense emotional experiences create energetic disturbances within us. Whenever we experience grief, betrayal, disappointment, loss, rejection, or conflict without fully processing those emotions, they often remain within us. These unprocessed experiences gradually become emotional residue that affects how we think, feel, respond, and experience life.
In energy healing, we often describe these as energetic blockages.
The natural flow of energy through the body and the chakras becomes disrupted. Over time, this can leave us feeling emotionally heavy, disconnected from ourselves, or unusually sensitive to people and situations around us.
When we experience painful events, our body does not remember them only through thoughts. Many experiences continue to live within our nervous system. They may appear as muscular tension, emotional numbness, heightened alertness, anxiety, difficulty relaxing, or a constant feeling that something is not safe.
You may notice that after a difficult chapter in your life, you become tired more easily, feel overwhelmed in crowded places, or struggle to experience the same joy you once felt. Within energy healing, these changes are often understood as changes within the aura or the human energy field.
Interestingly, modern psychology shares a very similar understanding.
Trauma changes our nervous system, emotional responses, and the way we experience relationships and safety. Whether we choose to describe this as changes in the aura, changes in our nervous system, or changes in our emotional wellbeing, the lived experience remains very real.
The beautiful part is this.
Trauma does not permanently damage your aura.
Healing is always possible.
With practices such as therapy, mindfulness, journaling, Reiki healing, meditation, breathwork, movement, supportive relationships, and emotional awareness, many people slowly begin feeling lighter, safer, calmer, and more connected with themselves again.
Personally, I like to think of the aura as a mirror of our inner world. When we lovingly care for our body, mind, emotions, and relationships, our energy naturally begins to brighten again.
If you would like to understand the deeper emotional process behind healing, I invite you to read Healing: The Journey to a Better You, where I explore how healing begins with awareness and self compassion before transformation becomes visible.
What Is Aura Cleansing?
Aura cleansing is an important part of energy healing and one of the simplest ways to care for your human energy field. Yet, it is something that most people completely overlook.
We are very particular about cleansing our physical body. We invest in natural soaps, organic skincare products, healthy food, and beautiful clothes because we want our body to feel fresh and cared for. We clean our homes, wash our clothes, and even maintain our personal belongings regularly.
But we often forget the energetic body, which absorbs just as much from our surroundings every single day.
The aura, which can be thought of as our energetic skin, is our first layer of protection. Throughout the day it absorbs stress, emotional tension, negative thoughts, arguments, crowded environments, and the emotions of the people around us.
If we do not consciously practise aura cleansing, this energetic residue slowly accumulates. Over time it may contribute to feelings of fatigue, irritability, emotional heaviness, lack of clarity, and eventually even physical discomfort.
Just as our clothes collect dust throughout the day, our aura can also collect energetic debris.
Every conversation we have, every emotion we experience, every environment we enter, and every thought we repeatedly think influences the quality of our energy.
Because the aura is invisible, many people dismiss it. But just because something cannot be seen does not mean it cannot be experienced.
The more aware we become of our aura, the easier it becomes to recognise when our energy feels balanced and when it needs attention.

How to Cleanse Your Aura Naturally
The ancient practices of aura cleansing and aura healing help strengthen your energetic body and restore balance.
We are all made of the five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space.
The following simple practices help reconnect you with these natural elements while supporting your energy field.
1. Alum (Fitkari)
Alum, commonly known as Fitkari, has been used in many cultures for generations as part of traditional energy cleansing practices.
It can be used to cleanse the aura by holding a piece of alum in your left hand and gently rotating it around the body before dissolving or disposing of it in water.
Many people also use alum during practices associated with removing the evil eye or buri nazar. Across different cultures, alum has traditionally been placed near entrances or in different areas of the home as a symbolic way of cleansing stagnant energy.
Some traditional practices include:
- Keeping alum in the corners of a room.
- Hanging a small piece wrapped in red or black cloth near the entrance.
- Placing alum in water while mopping the floor along with pink salt.
- Keeping alum beneath the pillow as part of traditional bedtime rituals.
These practices have existed across India, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and many indigenous traditions for centuries.
Whether viewed spiritually or symbolically, these rituals encourage us to become intentional about the energy we carry and the spaces we live in.

2. Rice
Rice has always been regarded as a sacred grain in India.
It is offered during prayers, religious ceremonies, and festivals because it symbolises abundance, purity, gratitude, and divine blessings.
Many traditional practices also use rice for aura cleansing.
Take a bowl of uncooked white rice.
Hold it quietly in your hands while chanting a prayer or mantra that feels meaningful to you.
Sit comfortably and allow yourself to become calm.
Visualise white or golden light filling the bowl of rice.
Using your dominant hand, slowly move handfuls of rice from the top of your head towards your feet, allowing the rice to symbolically absorb heavy emotions and stagnant energy.
Pay particular attention to the head, heart, and solar plexus area.
Once complete, respectfully return the rice to nature by burying it in the earth, placing it in flowing water, or offering it to fire according to your tradition.
The rice should never be reused.
This simple ritual reminds us that healing often begins by consciously letting go of what we no longer wish to carry.

3. OM Chant
One of the simplest and most powerful tools for aura healing is sound.
Find a comfortable place to sit.
Close your eyes and gently bring your awareness to your breath. Visualise your aura surrounding your body with soft golden or white light.
Silently set the intention that the vibration of OM cleanses, balances, and strengthens your aura.
Take a slow deep breath. As you exhale, chant OM slowly and completely.
Allow the vibration to begin deep within your body and travel upward through your spine until it gently radiates beyond the crown of your head.
Repeat this for at least five rounds.
Instead of focusing on doing it perfectly, simply notice how your body feels afterwards.
Sometimes the greatest healing begins by simply becoming present with yourself.

Final Thoughts
You may have heard the saying, “Vibes don’t lie.” There is a great deal of wisdom in those simple words. The energy that you carry is often the most authentic expression of who you are. Long before you speak, your aura has already introduced you to the world. It quietly reflects your thoughts, emotions, relationships, experiences, healing, and the way you care for yourself. In many ways, your aura becomes a mirror of your inner world, revealing the state of your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.
The beautiful part is that your aura is never fixed. Just as your physical body has an incredible ability to heal, your energy also has the capacity to renew itself. Every act of kindness that you show yourself, every moment of rest that you allow yourself, every difficult emotion that you choose to feel instead of suppress, every meditation, every journal entry, every Reiki session, every conscious breath, and every loving relationship slowly nourishes and strengthens your aura. Healing is rarely about one dramatic moment. More often, it is the result of small, compassionate choices that you make for yourself every single day.
Healing your aura is not about becoming a perfect person or trying to maintain positive energy all the time. It is about becoming more aware of yourself, listening to what your mind and body are trying to communicate, and responding with curiosity instead of judgement. As you begin caring for your inner world with greater compassion, your outer energy naturally becomes lighter, calmer, and more resilient.
Your aura is not asking you to become someone new. It is gently inviting you to come back home to who you have always been. The more you honour your own wellbeing, protect your energy, and choose healing over survival, the more your natural light begins to shine. That is the true purpose of aura healing—not to change who you are, but to remove everything that prevents your authentic self from being seen.
